Browser Notifications
Browsers (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, etc) can give websites permission to produce notifications. These are short messages the appear in the bottom right corner of the screen. Unfortunately, scammers have learned how to take advantage of this feature, and will produce false virus warnings or false warnings about expired antivirus licences. Here are instructions on how to clean up and disable these notifications.
Microsoft Edge
- Click the three horizontal dots in the top right corner (just below the X).
- In the drop-down menu, click Settings.
- In the left-hand menu click Privacy, search, and services.
- Click Site permissions, then All permissions, then Notifications.
- Turn off "Ask before sending", this blocks notifications. I recommend deleting any websites listed in the section "Allowed to send notification".
- You can now close Edge, and the settings will be retained.
Google Chrome
- Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner (just below the X).
- In the drop-down menu, click Settings.
- In the left-hand menu click Privacy and security.
- Click Site settings, then Notifications.
- Click "Don't allow sites to send notifications". I recommend deleting any websites listed in the section "Allowed to send notification".
- You can now close Chrome, and the settings will be retained.
Mozilla Firefox
- Click the three horizontal lines in the top right corner (just below the X).
- In the drop-down menu, click Settings.
- In the left-hand menu click Privacy & Security
- Scroll down to the Permissions section and click Settings next to Notifications.
- Put a tick in the box "Block new requests asking to allow notifications". If you can, I recommend clicking the "Remove All Web Sites" button.
- Click "Save Changes".
- You can now close Firefox.
